I hoped that I would have more pictures of my Great Grandfathers farm but I find I don't really - I guess I should say I have a couple of distance ones but not too much with details..........

The barn and the farmhouse plus the pond at the bottom with the ice house next to pond (not shown). At some point in time Mounsey and sons also delivered ice. I have some memories of the cattle, the bull and the chickens..... I was very young when I visited and it was Uncle Joe and Aunt Jennie's home. My little brother and I got to feed the chickens and Uncle Joe allowed us to gather eggs too. We would sit on the old wooden fence coming out from the barn and watch the HUGE bull in the pasture. I remember he was huge and scary. The farmhouse seemed to dark and a scary place with dozens of rooms.  I remember the wrap around porch that we played on..........  so much space for children.

Then there is this Apr 1964 news article about the old Mounsey Little barn being torn down to make way for property improvements and the old Little farmhouse was converted into 4 separate apartments.

I was just graduating from high school at this point.

AND below you can see the change. The new apartment building is complete. The pond and ice house are also gone.

When my parents took a trip back to New York somewhere in the late 1960's, my Mom, who lived with her Grandparents (Mounsey & Mary Little) in the 1920's at the farmhouse went into shock when she actually saw the change - she has never been back.

Other new homes are off on the left fork of the road. Yes what a big difference. Just sad. I am very slow sometimes to make or accept change ...........

NEWS OF ITHACA [New York]
Starving Cattle from Kansas Tamed by Farmer in Dryden
Little Conquers Beasts With Much Food

Dryden [Tompkins Co, New York] -- Back in '84, when the west was still the west and hordes of young men were heeding Horace Greeley's famous counsel, Mounsey Little left this community on a trip which took him into the cattle country of Texas panhandle.

Tho he saw his share of picturesque cowboys and Indians, the rugged and beautiful scenery of the west and the wild prairie and all the other attractions of 50 years ago, Mr Little's most cherished memory is of thousands of Texas beef cattle, milling on the flat and far-flung tablelands, an awe-inspiring sight into the man who began life in mountainous County Cumberland, England under towering Skiddaw, southern sentinel of Scotland.

There is much satisfaction now for Mr Little, at 85, in the ownership of a small herd of Hereford cattle brought east one year ago from the drought-stricken and famine-ridden Kansas plains to fatten in the lush meadows of his 55-acre "garden spot" on the Harford Road.

                                                                Cattle Transported
Last summer, when the great drought created havoc in the mid-western plain states, when feed crops burned up and cattle were dying by the thousand on the stricken ranges fulfil a long-cherished dream. Thru his son he brought a carload of some 80 starving cattle to this richly fertile section.

Mounsey Little chuckles now as he recalls how the stared sad thirsty cattle, weak and weary from their long trek, bolted from the car on a railroad siding in his lower meadow. Taking no notice of the runway provided specially for their unloading,  the cattle rushed from their car and plunged into the rich grazing of the pasture.

Looking more like 'sun fish' that beef cattle, their sides flat and their backs bowed up from a lack of bellyweight to hold them down, the cattle fed ravenously and picked up weight from the first.

                                                                 Adds Other Food
The Littles speeded up recovery in this case by converting surplus farm produce into cattle feed. Mounsey Little produced 500 bushels of potatoes from his cellars to augment the pasture supplies and added about five big wagonloads of beets, dumped about the pasture where it would be handiest for the new boarders.

Working patiently with the herd now split up into three scattered pastures, the Littles have finally tamed a few of the wild cattle sufficiently to come and lick salt from their hands. It has been a slow but highly interesting process for Mounsey Little, who can't recall having seen any Texas cowboys getting away with such tactics out on the panhandle back in '84
.
Of the 80-odd head of starved cattle unloaded in the lower pasture last summer, Mr Little fairly gloats over the 10 fat heifers and a half dozen eastern born calves he has wrangled away from his son to brighten  the rich green background of his neat farm with their white-splashed red coats.

                                                                  Seen by Motorists

A still scary and almost as fleet as a herd of deer, the cattle range over the restricted Little farm from the tree-shaded watering hole in the foothills to the deep clover field near the highway where they attract attention from passing motorists.

Mounsey Little was born in Bassenthwaite, County Cumberland in the rugged foothills of the Scottish mountains. As a boy, he roamed the northern English countryside, fishing for salmon in famous streams and never dreaming he would spend the greater part of his life far away in the rolling hills of Dryden town.

Coming to this country in '72, Mr Little soon found his way to Dryden village where he set up a market in '76 and build a flourishing business thru 40 active years as a merchant. Just before the world war, he retired from business in favor of his son Joe Little, and took over the neat little farm on the village limits on Harford road.
==================================

WOW it gives you a lot of information about his trip west to gather beef cattle but it really gives a lot of personal information about his beginnings and birth. It sure helps to put a little more meat on Mounsey's bones.

I recall when I was a young girl, and visiting the farm , my younger brother and I would go out onto the property with one of my parents and try to feed the HUGE hereford bull in the pasture. We would sit on the fences and watch the bull for long periods of time. The chickens would be roaming in and out of the pasture, into the barn and back out again. These were not normal sites to us. Somewhere I have some snapshots of the bull, the barn and I think my brother and me. I'll look for them. Where or where can they be? After all they are not digital images.

..........of all the information I have not found yet is the Marriage Date and Place for Mounsey and Mary (Brownrigg) LITTLE.  Here are pictures of both of them labeled wedding pictures but no date........
I will add this to my already lengthy TO-DO list for the Library in February.

I am making a few assumption for the time being so I have a time line to research by ............

Mounsey and Mary met in Tompkins County, New York (possibly Dryden, Virgil, Ithaca or Cortland) according to several newspaper articles. So this is where I will concentrate my efforts. I looked to see where Mary's parents lived and they never came to the US at that time. They were still in England. She came over alone or with someone else around 1868 when she was around 12 years old. Who did she come to live with at that age? I have searched and searched the 1870 US census with no luck. I may have to actually go line by line in these specific areas.

.......and the year/date of marriage: The couple had 4 children that I know about. The first child was born 21 July 1878...........  I would normally look 2-5 years on either side of 1878 in  the area's above. I see that every US and State Census Mounsey appears in was in Dryden, Tompkins, New York. So I am pretty sure that they were married in the area that they lived for their entire adult lives and they are buried there too.
NOW there is a family story that a Wedding Certificate was seen on the wall in Mounsey and Mary's  farmhouse by the daughter. She noticed  that it was dated a year after Mounsey & Marys's  first son  Isaac was born- 1879 ........  the story is believable but no proof yet....... everyone that may know about it have passed away or memories are very vague now. What happened to that Wedding Certificate on the wall? ......  the farm and property were sold between 1930-1940, after Mary's death 1929 and before Mounsey's death in 1940..

.........and of course of all things I was able to locate Mounsey LITTLE'S naturalization papers. At 57 years of age he applies and receives his Certificate of Naturalization. Why? Why at this time was it necessary to become an American citizen. He has been in this country and in one place since age 21. Now 36 years later he feels he needs to be an American citizen. It is 1908.

What was going on in 1908? What prompted him at this point in his life  to apply & receive his Naturalization Papers. I did a quick look at 1908 as a whole  and I didn't see anything going on that would prompt someone to apply for their citizenship papers. World War I was coming in a couple of years but I am not sure that there is an urgency immediately for that.

The Naturalization Paper I have is a copy of the notarized copy my cousin had in her collection of papers.

As you can see (maybe not read) below it tells me about the man Mounsey and his family.. Mounsey  is 57 years old, 5'9" tall, skin color is white, complexion is fair, color of eyes are blue, color of hair gray and visible distinguishing marks include a scar on left thumb.

State of New York, City of Ithaca #11170, petition volume 1, page 21, sub volume 1117, page 10

It also gives the name, age, place of residence of

.....    Joseph Hudson Little, 28, Dryden, NY
.....    Jennie E Little, 25, Dryden, NY

WOW, an original signature ([ok a copy of the signature] Mounsey Little

dated ......  30 November 1908 signed by the County Clerk

............and yes that is a snapshot of Mounsey Little in approximately 1910-1920. Sorry it is so hard to see clearly.

I have not located an actual passenger list for Mounsey's arrival into the United States but I have a lot of references to it.
There are several obituaries for Mounsey's, which is good because there is additional information in each one.
-...........  he came to this country in 1872
-2x.......  Mr Little came to Dryden [Tompkins Co., New York] in 1872 from Cumberland County in the north of England

From news article about starving cattle in Kansas
-.......... Mounsey Little was born in Bassenthwaite, County of Cumberland in the rugged foothills of the Scottish mountains. Coming to this country in '72. Mr Little soon found his way to Dryden village where he...........etc.

From his 86th birthday celebration article ........... Mr Little was born in England. Having relatives in Cortland [Tompkins Co. New York - unknown relatives YET] he and a brother [Joseph] came to America in 1872. The brother returned  to his native land two months later but Mr Little himself has never been back.

I did search on Joseph as Mounsey's traveling companion but nothing comes up. I did use Stephen Morse One Step webpages.....  put in the information and ended up in Ancestry.com. But still no luck. I have also checked FamilySearch.org but again nothing.

When you think about it, Mounsey was only 21 years of age and with his 22 year old brother Joseph, they sailed off to a new and mysterious place. That is very brave to me. Apparently there were relatives already in Cortland, New York which is not too far from Dryden and Virgil where he ended up. I don't know who the relatives are right now but that is another mystery to put on my to-do list.

Another Mystery......
........  it goes on my 'getting pretty lengthy' TO-DO Library list

I have been able to capture every census for Mounsey (Munsey) LITTLE......  from 1861 & 1871 in England as a young man and 1880 -1940 in United States plus two New York State Census 1892 & 1926. He was a butcher with a retail Meat Shop and then became a farmer. According to the census, Mounsey and Mary had 4 children (3 boys and 1 girl). Sons Isaac and Joseph helped in the meat market. His wife Mary passed away in 1929 [big thanks for NY State 1926 census], and by 1930 US Census Mounsey had moved in with his daughter's family.

In 1920 my mother, Mary Jane Little, was born and was moved in with her aunt and uncle. They are all together on the 1920 US Census.[not shown here] Then on the 1930 US Census when Mounsey as a widower moved in with his son in law and daughter my mother and another nephew were part of the family group.

Need to look at a marriage record for Mounsey and Mary (Brownrigg) Little approximately 1878. first child was born 1878.

AND, Mounsey arrived in America in 1872 .....   so he was not on the 1870 US Census but first shows on the 1880 US Census........ And he died in July 1940, and the 1940 Census was taken in April.........  so he was captured during his last year.

I keep thinking of Jane Mounsey and thinking what a strong brave woman she would have been. She had at least 10 children that we know about. Just think about that for the women in the audience who have had children already...... she has given birth to 10 children over a 22 years of her life - probably did it all natural and where ever she was at the time and then turned around and cleaned house, prepared dinner, took care of all the other children. No rest No time off. ......... YUK!!! that was a very hard life. And to the men in this audience .....  how would you support all these children over those 22 plus years? It looks to me after researching all these children that most were leaving the home at very early ages.

Mounsey was already out of the house on his own by age 19, who knows how much earlier he was working. He has stayed in the same area as his parents and siblings. Mounsey's father was a School Master and his mother was a School Mistress but he turned to work with a family living on a farm. And there is a nurse too. Probably neighbors of the LITTLES. There are 5 others that live with this family and are also farm servants. Unfortunately, the GANSON family is not familar to me.

1881 census next or is it?

This has been a heck of a two months chasing down items and documents for my Isaac/Jane LITTLE family. I have research as much as possible the first 8 children. All the information I have collected so far has been pretty new and informative information BUT NOW we come to my line in the LITTLE family - MOUNSEY LITTLE my great grandfather on my mothers fathers side.

Mounsey Little is the 9th of 10 children, 6th of 7 sons, named for his mothers side of the family - Jane Mounsey.  He was born in Bassenthwaite, Cumberland, England in 1851 and died in Dryden, Tompkins, New York, in 1940 aged 89 years.

I did find several references to Mounsey's birth place..........
There are several obituaries for Mounsey's
2x.......  Mr Little came to Dryden [Tompkins Co., New York] in 1872 from Cumberland County in the north of England

From news aricle about starving cattle in Kansas
-.......... Mounsey Little was born in Bassenthwaite, County of Cumberland in the rugged foothills of the Scottish mountains.

From his 86th birthday celebration article ........... Mr Little was born in England.

....from the Wikipedia:  Bassenthwaite is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Allerdale in Cumbria, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 412.[1] The village is about 7 miles (11 km) east of Cockermouth, and is approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) from Bassenthwaite Lake. Containing just a single pub and no shops, it is largely an agricultural community, with two farms within the village itself, with a number of holiday homes.

According to dates James only lived for 6 1/2 years. Unfortunately I don't know why James is not listed among their children in the only census he was alive for -- 1851. The other children of the time were listed but not JAMES. Any one have any suggestions?

How sad! Such a short life with very little evidence that he existed. I wonder what happened, what was wrong with him to shorten his life. I hope when I find where Isaac and Jane are buried that I will find a stone for him too...............

Thankful Thursday - Happy Birthday Jason!!

       Happy Birthday Jason
& many many more

What a delight!

My second son is born on a Thursday January 22, 1976 in Sacramento, California at the hospital on Mather Air Force Base.......  he'd been waiting 9 months to arrive and he didn't wait too long once it was time. He was anxious to meet the outside world. A bouncing healthy baby boy. His big brother was anxious to see what a brother was and when he could play with him..........

Welcome to the world Jason Gardner Aberle... what a lot of fun you have been over these many years...... 39 years later I find I see an awesome loving young man, smart, handsome and full of energy.
(1980-81 about 5yrs)

A son, brother, nephew, grandson, uncle, father, husband and a friend to many.............. and you can tell he is a 49er Fan.... actually he is a sportsaholic but getting better as the years go along and his relationships develop.

I think my job is done............... or is it?

DEATH: I was so surprised to see that Jane Eliza lived to a great age of 90. For the 1800's and early 1900's 90 years of age was quite old and people just didn't live that long. IN the mid to late 1900's & 2000's it seems that 90 - 100 years of age is pretty common place.

Just a little side note about LITTLE women....... they seem to have longevity and pretty good health in their genes to this day. And since I have a lot of LITTLE running through me this excites me ........

Since Jane died in 1936 I am glad to know that I still have the 1921 and 1931 UK census for Jane Eliza LITTLE Wilson when released in the future.

                                                                   Death Information

I did also locate a death record for Jane Eliza's father Isaac.... I did not locate one for her mother Jane. BUT......................

everyone up -  HAPPY DANCE!!!   Happy DANCE!!!

While "Googling" I entered "Jane Eliza Wilson tombstone Cumberland England" a couple of items popped up.........  this one gave me the resting place of many generations of Little/Wilson's and Wilson/ Greenup and Greenup/? .......  This booklet is only of this church and its cemetery inside the church and outside.......... unfortunately there are no pictures of the gravestones but now I know where to write/email too request them in the future. (OMG GOOGLE is my friend)

Caldbeck & District Local History Society (C&DLHS) undertook another survey in
the early 1990s, which they completed and published as
                MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS IN THE
CHURCH AND CHURCHYARD OF ST KENTIGERN’S
CALDBECK CUMBRIA
in 1996. (they did another update in 2000 which is included in the booklet that I downloaded)

John Greenup Wilson died 28 Feb 1923 aged 75 years and
his wife Jane Eliza (LITTLE) Wilson died at TOWN END HALTCLIFF 20 Jan 1936 aged 90 years

also listed was John Greenup Wilson's parents....
John Wilson died of STONE ENDS HOUSE died 13 July 1857 aged 50 years  and
his wife Ann Greenup died 22 August 1847 aged 28 years

also listed was Ann Greenup's parents...
John Greenup died 3 June 1845 aged 76 years and
                his wife Ann ( ) died Oct 12, 1882 aged 96 years

also listed is Any Isobel their granddaughter and wife of Robert Hall who died at THRANG CRAGG, MARTINDALE July 28th 1919 aged 37 years (John & Jane's daughter) Robert Hall is not listed.

On another page I found another child of John & Jane.........
Edwin James Wilson died at TOWN END HALTCLIFFE February 1946 aged 69 years. Also of Sarah his wife who died 13th October 1968 aged 86 years.

Here is part of page 41 from above (second column) ........... in the first column are dozens more Greenup's that I am sure are somehow related to my John Greeup's family.......  but for now this is as far as I go with the Greenup family...........

This also gives me the name of John Greenuup Wilson - JOHN WILSON. Now I am wondering who's name is GREENUP .....  is this his fathers middle name or his mothers maiden name OR a grandparent name OR OR??

Another mystery!!

CENSUS: I have been very lucky to find a census for every year one was published from 1851 to 1911.........  I believe Jane lived a little over 20 years longer but England has only released their census through 1911 so far.

1851 ISAAC LITTLE 45 (abt 1806) HEAD; spouses name: Jane; gender: male; where born; Castle Sowerby, Cumberland, England; civil parish: Bassenthwaite; county/island: Cumberland; country: England; registration district: cockermouth; sub-registration district: Keswick; ED: 4a; household schedule #: 30; Others in resident:
  Jane  wife 38  Cumberland, Greystone
Isaac son  10  Cumberland, Castle Sowerby  scholar
Hudson son 7  Cumberland, Bassenthwaite   scholar
Jane Eliza  dau 5  Cumberland, Bassenthwaite
===================

1861 UK Census......... Jane is found in the Mounsey family home as a servant.  She is only 15 at the time and is a servant. I cannot imagine my sons out working on their own at age 15 but in those days this seems to be common place.  I do have other ancestors with the family surname of MOUNSEY so I will be checking to see if these families cross.........

I do have a Robert Mounsey same age as Jane. Robert is married to a Mary Wilson (is she related to John G Wilson?). Son of Mr Mounsey and Eliza ?. He is originally from England and ended up in New York, Cortland County....... So maybe it is not such a small world after all.
===============================

1871 UK Census finds Jane E Little married to John Greenup Wilson and starting a family........ she also has a servant in the home who is the same age as she is.

==============================

1881 UK Census shows Jane Eliza Wilson with family in the same place....... with a growing family. Looks like the homestead is called "Stone Ends Home"  and it is a farm of some sort. Looks like all the children so far were born at home. 5 children listed. Now that is a hard life.......  you are definitely on your own.

=====================================

1891 UK Census ..... again finds Jane Eliza Wilson with husband and family in the same place...... there are 2 more children for a total of 7.
===============================

1901 UK Census ......  again I found Jane Eliza Wilson with husband and a fraction of the children....  Only three children remain in the home and all are adults- they are all listed as farm workers ...... it seems that Gertrude should still be listed but she's not listed- she would be 14 in 1901. Did she die? Or did she go to work somewhere else?  Another mystery.

.....and the last UK census available from UK 1911.....  Jane Eliza Wilson with husband and one son and another young male.....a Robert Strony - I believe this is Robert Strong. I do have another Strong in the family tree but not Robert. I have a John Strong that married Jane's first sister Mary. Maybe related or not!!  Edwin was out of the house in the 1901 census but is back in the 1911 census.

I can hardly wait till the 1921 UK census is released - so that would be 2021(only 6 years to wait)

Jane Eliza LITTLE is next.........  she is the 7th child, the 3rd daughter  and it looks like she was partially named after her mother. Just wondering is Eliza a nickname for Elizabeth?

I have collected the 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901, 1911 UK census for Jane Eliza Little. Unfortunately for me I believe 1911 is the last census England has released so far..........
